Director: Pablo Larraín ‘Ema’, the highly anticipated drama by Pablo Larraín starring Kristen Stewart in which he will become like Lady Di, will premiere worldwide in competition at the Venice Film Festival, according to Variety.

Written by ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight, the film centers on a weekend in the early 1990s when Diana decided to part ways with Prince Charles amid rumors of adventures. The late princess was spending the Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk when she decided to leave her marriage to the crown prince.

Stewart stars in the film alongside ‘Poldark’ star Jack Farthing, who plays Prince Charles. The cast also includes BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall (“Mr. Turner”), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) and Sean Harris (‘Mission Impossible: Fallout’), they are also in the story, although the roles they will play are unknown. The film will be released in 2022 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Diana, who passed away on August 31, 1997.

It is not the first time that Stewart presents a biopic in the Italian contest. In 2019 she took there ‘Seberg’, a film that reviewed the life of Jean Seberg. The film was out of competition, while ‘Ema’, the film that the Chilean director showed in that same edition, was presented in the Official Selection. Three years earlier, Larraín had shown ‘Jackie’ in Venice, another portrait of another 20th century icon, Jackie Kennedy, painstakingly portrayed by Natalie Portman.

The US filmmaker Michel Franco will return this year to the Venice Film Festival, in its 78th edition, with his film “ema” a year after receiving the Silver Lion for his controversial film “New Order” (2020).

“I am so grateful ema and excited to return to the Venice Film Festival with a new film. It has been a pleasure to have such a talented cast and to collaborate with people I admire as much as Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Filming ‘Sundown’ was an extremely rewarding experience “said the director in a statement.

As is known, the film was shot in the city of Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, and tells the story of an English family that sees their vacation interrupted by an unexpected call.

The announcement ema of Franco’s arrival in Venice took place this Monday accompanied by the news that two more Latin Americans would be in the official competition for the Golden Lion of the international festival.

They are the Chilean director Pablo Larraín (“Ema”, 2019) who arrives at the film show with his film “Spencer”, and the Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas, the only Latin American to have won the Golden Lion for his film “From there “(2015), who will also compete with Franco with his film” La caja “.

It should be noted that in both mentioned films by the Venezuelan director, the work of Michel Franco is present as a producer.

“Sundown” stars the English actor Tim Roth, known for his work in Quentin Tarantino films such as “Reservoir Dogs” (1992) or “Inglorius Bastards” (2009), and the French actress and singer Chalotte Gainsbourg, one of the Favorite actresses of the Danish director Lars von Trier.

Both actors are joined by the performance of Mexican Lazua Larios and British actor Henry Goodman.

This is not the first time that Franco has worked with actor Tim Roth, as he was previously the star of his film “Chronic” (2015).

The 78th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will take place in Lido Venice from September 1 to 11, 2021. EFE

The Venice Festival has welcomed Pablo Larraín like a prodigal son. The proximity is in sight: three of his last six films have competed for the Golden Lion at La Mostra (Post Mortem, Jackie, Ema), a figure that will grow to four when the 2021 edition of the contest welcomes the premiere of Spencer, his approach to the life of Lady Di during the days when she decided to divorce Prince Charles and the royal family.

Starring Kristen Stewart, the film was shot between Germany and England earlier this year. It has a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), original music by Jonny Greenwood, edited by also Chilean Sebastián Sepúlveda – Larraín’s regular collaborator – and will be ready to perform at the event, which will run between September 1 and 11.

His presence at the festival was already announced –as well as that of Pedro Almodóvar, who will also inaugurate the event–, but this Monday the full contingent of titles that will also go for the highest award was confirmed.

Unlike the last edition of Cannes, which did not have Latin American filmmakers in the race for the Palme d’Or, Venice incorporates the new films by the Mexican Michel Franco (Sundown) and the Argentines Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn (Official Competition), in addition to the second film by Venezuelan Lorenzo Vigas (La caja), who in 2015 won the Golden Lion for the drama starring Alfredo Castro, From There.

Also marking differences with the French contest that took place in July, Netflix appears with two films in competition: The hand of God, a film with autobiographical elements by Italian Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty), and the western The power of the dog, by New Zealander Jane Campion.

Ema production is born from the novel by Thomas Savage, in the same way that other authors of Venice 2021 also take inspiration from literature. Maggie Gyllenhaal is based on Elena Ferrante’s The Dark Daughter; Frenchwoman of Lebanese origin Audrey Diwan collects Annie Ernaux’s The Event, and Frenchman Xavier Giannoli films his gaze on The Lost Illusions, by Honoré de Balzac.

Americans Paul Schrader (The card counter) and Ana Lily Amirpour (Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon) Ema will also release their new films in the contest that this year has South Korean Bong Joon-ho as president of the jury. Meanwhile, the selection of feature films out of competition will include Dune, by Denis Villeneuve; The last duel, by Ridley Scott, and Last night in Soho, by Edgar Wright.

Although it still does not have a release date anywhere in the world, it is already beginning to clear who will be in charge of bringing the new film by the director of Ema The Club to the cinemas of the world.

In the United States, the person responsible will be Neon (Parasite), while in Chile, as confirmed by Culto, the company that kept the rights to Spencer is Diamond Films, which Jackie also premiered during the summer of 2017.

The space it occupies in the calendar has not yet been defined, but it will inevitably be conditioned by the possibilities that will open up to it during the awards season. At the 89th Oscars, Larraín’s biopic about Jacqueline Kennedy garnered three nominations, including Best Actress for Natalie Portman.
